A Tea Addict's Journal

An upgrade in taste

January 8, 2011 · 4 Comments

As I returned to the US and brewed up my first pot of tea here… I find myself deeply dissatisfied with what I’m drinking.  When I left, I would be quite happy drinking this.  No more.  Now this tea, some aged, broken cake, seems thin and weak.  It’s got decent flavours, but the body is not there, nor does it have the depth that I need.  The $100 cake I bought a few days ago that is traditionally stored since 2001 seems leaps and bounds better.

Uh oh, I think my tongue just got upgraded.

If you’re concerned be more scientific about it. Do some double blind tests.

You might find exactly the opposite.

In this particular instance anyway, I’m pretty certain that won’t be the case, partly because I wasn’t even thinking about the other tea when I had this one.

I find that occasionally drinking tea for a few hours with fellow tea fanatics raises my standards, which have a tendency to drop during periods of solitary drinking. We bring out our best stuff, and we brew and sip attentively.

It usually doesn’t take long for me to slip back, I must say.

I think solitary drinking is indeed quite detrimental to one’s ability to taste. It’s terrible.
