I drank the 70s Guang Yun Gong from Hou De today. I am a little too lazy to write a real review, but suffice to say, while it is a reasonble tea, it’s not great.

I’ve had better 30 years old before, and I’ve had better puerh, period. The tea itself is fairly dark, and is obviously well aged. There is some cha qi, but not terribly strong and not terribly impressive. The taste is mellow, with a certain kind of lingering sweetness that is slightly like a cooked puerh. I also saw some traces of white on some leaves — I think indicative of a little mould. The tea on a whole just lacked the punch and bite that I look for in an aged tea. It doesn’t have the sort of strength that I like from good puerhs. Of course, this is sort of a personal taste issue. But I do think that this isn’t the best example of a 70s tea.

It’s not expensive considering its age. At the same time, I’d rather pay half the price and buy the 8582 from the 90s instead. I like that one better.

Marshaln, can you please tell me which ’70s teas have stood out as high quality? What characteristics do you enjoy in an older tea?

I have tried the ’70s GYG and quite enjoy it, but I don’t find it as impressive or focused in flavor as the 60’s GYG. I have some 60’s left over, I need to try it again. I’m surprised that you don’t find the 70’s GYG to have a strong cha qi. When I tried it, it had me quite electrified.

Yeah, got the samples. Lots of stuff. Mine’s the Fengqing Chinese zodiac stuff.

I don’t know, it didn’t strike me as having strong cha qi for some reason, Davelcorp. I am really starting to think that somehow the samples you and psychopuncture got are superior to the samples BBB and I got. It sounds like mine tastes like his, whereas yours are psychopuncture’s taste better. I really wonder if a portion of the cake got a little messed up thanks to dampness or something, because I saw something that looks like mould on my sample. Mould = bad, as you well know 🙂

The most memorable 70s tea I’ve had is I think the Grand Yellow Label. Hot stuff. The best 70s tea I’ve owned is some loose stuff actually — from the Best Tea House. They’re still selling it, and really quite tasty (not the ones I have right now).

Perhaps our samples are from different cakes? I ordered mine several months ago and psychopuncture received a neifei with his because it was the last sample. Maybe you and bears got peices of an inferior bing? I’m quite certain that my sample did not exhibit any mould.

Ah, that would explain it. Didn’t he say he’s selling it bing by bing? I thought you guys ordered it the same time we did. It seems like BBB and my samples are certainly inferior to yours.

Have you tried emailing him and telling him you suspect that your cake had mould? I wonder what his response would be?

Na, not worth it. I don’t want to piss off some vendor.

Besides, I won’t buy the cake anyway.
